Ryan Howard's Return Won't Help the Phillies

#6 Ryan Howard, 1B, Phillies

Ryan Howard returning to Philadelphia after tearing his Achilles last September was an accomplishment for him and maybe some Phillies fans. After going 2-4, fans are really hoping this is the spark they need. Despite Howard batting .500 in his first game back the Phillies, they lost in a pitching duel. With the score 0 to 0 in the 8th inning against the Braves, Charlie Manuel came out to pull starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick. That is when things blew up for the Phillies, as they allowed 5 runs in the 8th inning, even allowing Brian McCann to hit a Grand Slam.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Philadelphia needs pitching! They have a decent offense and used to have great pitching, but after an injury bug hit them as well as the fact that some of their great pitchers left, this has caused the Phillies to be now 11 games under .500 which makes their playoff chances look a little blurry.

The only way I see the Phillies making the playoffs is if they go out and find pitchers. Yes, "pitchers" as in more than one. They need at least one more starter and a couple of relief pitchers. This wouldn't even guarantee them a playoff spot. The only way they will make the Playoffs is if they start scoring a lot and hope their pitching can just hold a team to 5 runs.

Now the season is only half way over, and there is a lot of baseball left to be played, but don't expect any spectacular run from the Phillies unless Howard hits 30 Home Runs and not to mention their pitchers have to prove they can go 9 innings without allowing that one big inning, that always ruins everything for them. If this happens, the Phillies have a chance to make the Playoffs, a very slim chance at a World Series appearance, and almost no chance at winning the World Series.
