2017 Offensive Tackle Prospects

#74 Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama

QB / RB / WR / TE / OT / IOL / EDGE / DL / LB / CB / S

This tackle class is not nearly as bad as some scouts and analysts are making it out to be. No, there is not a Jake Long type of prospect in this group, but there are plenty of prospects with the potential to be very good starters for a long time. Regardless, at least 2 or 3 tackles will come off the board in the first round. Let Tackle is a premium position.

Prospect rankings are based on film breakdown provided by Draft Breakdown with a minimum of 3 games watched per prospect in most cases. Measurables, athletic testing, future roles and projections are also taken into effect.
Injuries, off the field issues, etc. will mot be taken into consideration. These rankings are based on talent and projections on the field. Players are grouped into "tiers" to separate them. Players that I project as early round picks will be placed in the "All-Pro"/"Pro Bowl" tiers for example. Prospects that I saw limited film of or was unable to watch at all will not be ranked, but listed under "Other Notable Prospects". Specifically, prospects well known in the scouting community and draft sites like CBS Sports and Pro Football Focus will be listed here.

Tier One: All-Pro Prospects

1. Cam Robinson*
Experience: Junior | School: Alabama
Height: 6-6 | Weight: 321 lbs.
Hand Size: 10 1/2" | Arm Length: 35 1/2" | Grade: Round 1

40 Time: 5.15 | Bench: N/A | Vertical: 26" | Broad: 106"
3 Cone: 7.82 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.82 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: The most talented tackle in this class. Has the frame, length, and athleticism to be an elite level blindside protector. Dominant run blocker. Mauler. It's over once he gets his hands on you. Can get to the second level with ease, but needs to be more consistent in getting his hands on a linebacker when he gets there. Issues with balance and lunging at times. Held his own against talented SEC pass rushers, including Myles Garrett. May project better as a right tackle or even at guard. I believe I'm higher on him than most.

Tier Two: Pro Bowl Prospects

2. Garett Bolles*
Experience: Junior | School: Utah
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 300 lbs.
Hand Size: 9 3/8" | Arm Length: 34" | Grade: Round 2

40 Time: 4.95 | Bench: N/A | Vertical: 28" | Broad: 115"
3 Cone: 7.29 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.55 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: One of the most athletic tackles I have seen in a while. Has the agility and quickness to consistently handle speed rushers on the edge. Can struggle a bit against power rushers. Needs to get stronger. Many scouts project he will, so this may not be an issue going forward. While I believe he proved to be a very consistent and reliable pass blocker, he is even better as a run blocker. Does a good job sustaining blocks and opening up holes. Comfortable in space and can get to the second level with ease. Some issue with balance that appear to be fixable (can overextend at times). Plays with a mean streak. Should look to improve hand placement on blocks (too far outside which could lead to some holding penalties). Will be 25 at the beginning of the season. May not be a fit for every team. Should be targeted by teams who run a zone-blocking scheme.

Tier Three: Future Starter Prospects

3. Dorian Johnson
Experience: Senior | School: Pittsburgh
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 300 lbs.
Hand Size: 10 7/8" | Arm Length: 35 1/4" | Grade: Round 2

40 Time: 5.27 | Bench: 21 | Vertical: 30" | Broad: 114"
3 Cone: 8.39 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 5.09 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: Athletic guard who is a very good pass protector. Though he could be more effective with his initial punch, he uses his hands well and has very good footwork and balance. Has the ability to move opposing linemen in the running game. Really good pull blocker, but needs to do a better job getting a body on someone once he gets to the second level. Naturally, I think he has the skill set as well as the length and ability to play tackle. That's where he may project best.

4. Ryan Ramczyk*
Experience: Junior (RS) | School: Wisconsin
Height: 6-6 | Weight: 305 lbs.
Hand Size: 10 7/8" | Arm Length: 33 3/4" | Grade: Round 2

40 Time: N/A | Bench: 25 | Vertical: N/A | Broad: N/A
3 Cone: N/A | 20-Yard Shuttle: N/A | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: Ramczyk is a solid tackle prospect. He isn't special, but he is a balanced tackle. Above average athleticism for the position and a prospect who displays good footwork and technique. Can effortlessly get to the second level and punish linebackers. Handles bull rushes very well, but had some struggles with quickness and speed rushers, especially potential first round pick Taco Charlton. Has trouble sustaining blocks. More of a "punch" blocker. Can be late off the ball, which causes some of the issues with speed rushers. Should be able to play on the right side as well as the left. In a normal draft class, probably not a first round pick.

Tier Four: Developmental Starter Prospects

5. Will Holden
Experience: Senior (RS) | School: Vanderbilt
Height: 6-8 | Weight: 313 lbs.
Hand Size: 10 1/8" | Arm Length: 33 1/4" | Grade: Round 3

40 Time: 5.47 | Bench: 23 | Vertical: 28" | Broad: 111"
3 Cone: 7.71 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.72 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: Great size for an NFL tackle, though his arms may not be as long as some teams would prefer for a 6 foot 8 tackle. Great straight line athlete, though lacking elite lateral quickness. Could force him to move to right tackle, as he struggled a bit with speed rushers at Vandy, though held up pretty well against Derek Barnett, but struggled against Charles Harris and Missouri. Shows the power and ability to drive you look for in a run blocker, and plays with good balance and technique in space. Very effective once he gets to the second level. His height would make it tougher for him to slide inside to guard, but projects well as a right tackle prospect.

6. Roderick Johnson*
Experience: Junior | School: Florida State
Height: 6-7 | Weight: 301 lbs.
Hand Size: 10 3/4" | Arm Length: 36" | Grade: Round 3

40 Time: 4.90 | Bench: N/A | Vertical: 29.5" | Broad: 103"
3 Cone: 7.95 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.94 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: Has all of the raw tools and talent to be a high level tackle in the NFL. A tall, lean tackle with above average athleticism and exceptional length. Technique needs to be cleaned up and there are some balance issues. I would not call him a dominant run blocker, but he is a pretty good one. Very good pass protector, but struggles with quickness. Lacks functional strength at times. Needs to add more weight to his frame.

7. Antonio Garcia
Experience: Senior (RS) | School: Troy
Height: 6-7 | Weight: 300 lbs.
Hand Size: 9 7/8" | Arm Length: 33 3/8" | Grade: Round 4

40 Time: 5.15 | Bench: 24 | Vertical: 31" | Broad: 108"
3 Cone: 7.72 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.94 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: Garcia is a good athlete and has upside as a blind side pass protector. Has above average length and very good footwork. But, he has some issues. He's often not quick enough off the ball and that allows him to be beaten. He also needs to do a better job of using his hands, and he is usually late trying to make contact with the pass rusher he is matched up against. Functional strength is a question mark and there are some balance issues. Decent run blocker, but is a better pass blocker at this point. Consistency may be the issue in general, as he flashes dominance at times. Raw tackle prospect worth a look in the middle rounds.

8. Julie'n Davenport
Experience: Senior | School: Bucknell
Height: 6-7 | Weight: 316 lbs.
Hand Size: 10 1/2" | Arm Length: 36 1/2" | Grade: Round 4

40 Time: 5.45 | Bench: 18 | Vertical: 29" | Broad: 107"
3 Cone: 7.57 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.69 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: Raw prospect with elite traits that will likely see his name being called on Day 2 of the draft. Outstanding length and above average athleticism to go with a prototypical frame.

Tier Five: Developmental Backup Prospects

9. Adam Bisnowaty
Experience: Senior (RS) | School: Pittsburgh
Height: 6-6 | Weight: 304 lbs.
Hand Size: 11 3/8" | Arm Length: 33 7/8" | Grade: Round 5

40 Time: 5.23 | Bench: 23 | Vertical: 29.5" | Broad: 96"
3 Cone: 7.28 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.91 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: May need to shift inside of move to right tackle due to lacking great athleticism and his struggles in pass protection. He's really good sustaining blocks on the second level, but at times is late off the snap which will cause him to be beaten. May not have the foot quickness to recover consistently. Doesn't have great length, and there are some issues with his pad level. He's an above average run blocker. Could be a starter down the line.

10. Chad Wheeler
Experience: Senior (RS) | School: Southern California
Height: 6-7 | Weight: 296 lbs.
Hand Size: 9 1/2" | Arm Length: 33 1/8" | Grade: Round 6

40 Time: 5.30 | Bench: 17 | Vertical: 24" | Broad: 105"
3 Cone: 8.10 | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.99 | 60-Yard Shuttle: N/A

Analysis: Taller tackle prospect, but only average length. Has the athleticism to play in space, but struggles with speed and quickness. Pad level is high which causes several issues, and he loses leverage often. Balance issues are apparent as well. Could thrive more as a pulling guard, where he can reach the second level. Lacks core strength and needs to learn to use his hands better.
